Abstract

This study examines the strategic role of Universitas Sapta Mandiri (Univsm) in strengthening the regional innovation ecosystem in Balangan Regency, South Kalimantan. As the only higher education institution in the area, Univsm faces complex geographical and structural challenges. The research aims to explore how Univsm establishes adaptive academic–technology synergy tailored to the local context. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study strategy. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. The findings show that Univsm functions not only as an academic center but also as a driver of social and technological innovation through cross-sectoral collaboration with local governments, industry actors, and communities. Such synergy is reflected in a locally-oriented curriculum, applied research programs, and the use of digital technologies to reach remote communities. Despite limitations in infrastructure and funding, Univsm has developed a contextual innovation model that is both flexible and inclusive. This research concludes that adaptive and collaborative approaches are essential for developing a sustainable regional innovation ecosystem and confirms that innovation can grow not only in urban centers but also from rural areas through organized local capabilities.
